Frequently asked questions

How does the detector work?
We visit the homepage as a regular visitor, then parse the HTML and response headers for WordPress fingerprints: the wp-content path, the active theme’s style.css, plugin slugs under wp-content/plugins, and known builder/cache/security/SEO signatures.
Are results 100% accurate?
Very accurate for typical sites. Plugins served from a separate CDN or with a renamed slug can be invisible. We also can’t see plugins that are deactivated or whose assets aren’t loaded on the homepage.
Why is the WordPress version sometimes blank?
Many site owners strip the meta generator tag and block readme.html for security — that’s a healthy hardening choice.
Do you store URLs?
We cache scan results for 12 hours to speed up repeat lookups. We never share scanned URLs with third parties.
Are recommended alternatives affiliate links?
Yes — alternatives come from our Marketplace or Envato CodeCanyon via referral links that support HostingTags at no extra cost to you.
How many lookups can I run?
12 lookups per hour per IP — enough for power users, low enough to protect both our servers and the target sites.
